The Future is Parcel Boxes

The Future is Parcel Boxes

For 175 years, red post boxes have provided a convenient place to drop off letters for delivery. Yet, this British icon is in the process of being changed. Royal Mail has recognised that the future is parcel boxes and 3,500 of them will soon be installed in UK cities.

Why Upgrade Post Boxes?

In recent decades, the volume of letters being sent has significantly declined. We are far more likely to correspond via email, text or online platforms than sending letters, cards or brochures. However, the rise in online purchases has pushed up the volume of parcels and packages that are sent.

To remain relevant, Royal Mail has recognised that the narrow slots in post boxes no longer meet our requirements. To remain competitive in the market, they need to offer the facility to conveniently send parcels. Therefore, the upgraded post boxes include a pull-down drawer, where packages up to 45x35x16cm in size can be posted.

Where Are The New Post Boxes?

After a successful trial of the parcel post boxes in areas of Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire, they are now being installed in Edinburgh, Manchester, Sheffield and Nottingham.

To use the parcel facility, you need to pay for postage online. You’ll then receive a barcode to scan at the post box to unlock the parcel drawer. Once delivered, you receive a digital proof of posting. A south-facing solar panel on the top of the new post boxes will power the scanner.

This upgrade aims to make it convenient for people in these cities to send small packages. So, is there a way to make it easier to receive our orders?

Can You Buy Parcel Drop Boxes for Home?

It’s not just Royal Mail that can benefit from moving with the times. Letterboxes through the front door are no longer a practical option for modern living, especially if you love online shopping or have set up an e-commerce business. The great news is that you can buy parcel boxes for home installation, too.

As with the upgraded Royal Mail boxes, parcel drop boxes for home installation offer a secure hold for the delivery of small packages. While no code is needed to access the hold, integrated anti-theft features ensure that the contents cannot be retrieved through the postal slot. Each lockable parcel box is supplied with two keys to gain entry to the hold.

What Are The Benefits of Parcel Drop Boxes?

The main benefit of installing a parcel drop box at home is that you don’t have to be in to receive all deliveries. Your packages can be safely deposited into the box, rather than being left on the doorstep or with a neighbour. This greatly improves your chances of receiving your goods!

There are also several different types of parcel drop boxes to suit different requirements. Some are free standing, others fit through walls or are gate mounted. This means the box can be located for optimum convenience. Some people like it next to the front door, others at the perimeter of their property to minimise disruption from delivery drivers. What would be your preference?

We also offer larger capacity parcel boxes. These are a great option if you or your business receives multiple deliveries in a day and/or are often away for a few days.
